Candy Race Car – Great for Kids Parties

It is hard coming up with something for a classroom treat for holidays or for a child’s party. My son, Spencer loves taking something for his friends at school.

This treat isn’t healthy but it is easy to make and your kids will love it!

Candy Race Car- Great for Kids Parties

First you will need a glue gun, glue sticks (both I purchased at the dollar store.), mini Hershey chocolate bars, Tootsie rolls, chocolate coins and juice boxes.

You can also change it up. If you want instead of Tootsie Rolls, try a chocolate that is small like one to use for the front fender. You can choose a different small chocolate bar too. The sky is the limit on how you design yours.  Choose a juice box that is your child’s favourite.

I found mints in a wrapper didn’t give the same effect as a chocolate coin did for the wheel look. And the Hershey chocolate bar did look like it was a wing with the side flaps of the package.

Figure out how many cars that you wish to make and decide on the amount of items you need.  For one car you need one Hershey chocolate bar, one Tootsie roll , four chocolate coins and one juice box.

Just put a dab of glue on each coin and apply it to the juice box sides. Then put glue on the Tootsie roll and place it where the front of the car is located. Lastly put glue on the bottom of the Hershey chocolate bar and place it on the top back area of the race car.

It is that simple. And your kids will love the race cars for themselves and their friends!

Let me know if you make this for your child’s class or birthday parties in the comments below. I love hearing about how the kids enjoyed them.

Keeping A Long Distance Marriage Alive

Keeping a Long Distance Marriage Alive

My husband is a truck driver and he is gone through the week. Usually that means that I will see him for his required time off and then he is back on the road again.

A part of me sometimes is jealous of those that have spouses that are home at night and they are able to see each other every day. We haven’t had that in almost a decade and we have been together for 17 years, so this has been a way of life for us for a long time. We have learned ways to keep our relationship going strong.

Before he became a truck driver, my husband worked out of town. And I use to feel a pain of jealousy for those that could see him daily. It was silly to feel jealous but it happens when you don’t see them daily. These people saw him often and I only got to see him on weekends, so it was hard. It is one of the reasons why we changed how we did things, and learned to make the most out of the moments that we had together.

Here are ways for keeping a long distance marriage alive. I call it a long distance marriage even though he does come home at the end of the week because he is gone more than he is home.

How To Clean Your Washing Machine

How To Clean Your Washing Machine

Most of us don’t think about cleaning our washing machine because we assume that when we put laundry detergent in, that it would clean our washing machine. I mean after all if it cleans our clothes it should clean our machine.

Sadly, that isn’t the case. By cleaning your washing machine, you prevent weird stains on your clothes.

I usually remember to do this when I am doing my spring or fall cleaning.

It is very easy to do with a top loader and front loader.

Being a Mom with a Chronic Illness

Being a Mom with a Chronic Illness

Being a mom with a chronic illness isn’t easy.  Nightly you worry that you will let your children down by being too sick to do something the next day. What if you get sick and end up back at the hospital? So many what ifs that you worry about in your own mind.

When I found out I had kidney failure, my biggest fear was that I would leave my children without a mother. My father passed while my mother was pregnant with me. Even now at 38, I wish I had a chance to get to know my dad.

While sitting in the hospital bed for 8 days, I thought about what will happen. Will my kids know how much I love them if something did happen? Would they remember me. (At the time Hayley was 11 and Spencer was 7.) Even now thinking about all this, I have tears fall. I remember the fear I was feeling like it was yesterday.

Frugal Valentine’s Day Ideas for Couples

Valentine’s Day means spending the day with a special someone. It doesn’t mean you have to break the bank in order to enjoy some time with them and celebrate your relationship.

Simple ideas can make your day perfect.

There have been many years that my husband and I stayed in and just enjoyed the day together. Especially when the kids were younger. It wasn’t easy to find a sitter for Valentine’s Day so we usually just made dinner and watched a movie together.

Here are some frugal ideas for Valentine’s Day:

Make a coupon booklet for someone special. Add your own ideas to the book. (ie. Foot Rub, Night off from Cooking, Date Night Your Choice etc. ) You can find a free template from 247moms.com to use when you are making your coupon booklet. (If you don’t want to make your own from scratch.)

Instead of going out, make dinner and surprise your special someone with a romantic dinner by candle light. (Bonus points if you make your special someone’s favourite meal. )

Valentine's Day Dinner

If you have Netflix, watch the movie of your first date if it is on there or pick a movie you both want to see. Grab some snacks, cuddle and enjoy the movie together.

Netflix for Valentine's Day

Make a collage of photos of you as a couple. Add any ticket stubs or brochures to places you have been together. Maybe even add stuff from where you went on your first date. Give it to your special someone to hang up.

Have a firepit in the backyard? Bundle up, grab some wine, start a fire. Enjoy each other’s company under the stairs while you talk and laugh. Don’t like to drink? Make hot chocolate for both of you to enjoy.

Spending time at a fire.

Stick Love Notes all over the house where your special someone would find them. Because my husband is a trucker and on the road often. I like to stick notes into his gym bag, so that he see them when he needs to get clothes out for himself.

If you have the children with you on Valentine’s Day, you can make it special with them. Have heart shaped foods (Pizzas, eggs, cupcakes and more), play some board games together and then settle down with some snacks and with a kid friendly movie on Netflix. (or pop a movie into the DVD player.)
