Being Prepared for Emergencies

Being Prepared for Emergencies

It doesn’t matter if it is summer or winter, with the chance of your electricity going out. You need to have a kit for yourself and your family just in case.

All you need to do is have a tote with a lid to store some items in there to protect them and keep them located where you can get to them if you need them.

I remember a friend in Florida telling me that she kept 3 totes of stuff handy for hurricane weather. One tote was emergency clothes and their ID and any important papers. The other tote was food and water and the last tote was for their dogs. They often left the area before a hurricane came in, so they were prepared because they needed to travel. I think it is a great idea.

Here are some items you could use for your Emergency Kit:

  • bottle water – For drinking or cooking if you can’t use the water in your home.
  • Food that won’t spoil – canned food, energy bars, packaged foods and pet food if you have pets.
  • A manual can opener
  • First Aid Kit
  • Battery operated or wind up flashlight. We have a wind up one and it comes in handy.
  • Candles, matches and lighters.
  • Swiss Army Knife
  • Hand sanitizer

We went through three days of our power being out in the middle of summer because was a tornado a town over that destroyed the hydro towers.

We started using our barbecue like we were camping. I even made my morning cup of tea on it. Three days was a long time to go without electricity for us. It was also hot out so at night our house was like an oven.

If you are at home and there are no real dangers other than being stuck without power, get out the board games or books and relax.

Being Prepared for Emergencies

We were lucky that we didn’t have to leave our home but if the area you are in isn’t safe, here are some extra things you should take with you if you have time to take them.

Here are some other additional items you may need:

  • A portable stove
  • sleeping blankets
  • toiletries (don’t forget toilet paper)
  • Paper plates, plastic cutlery, garbage bags
  • pots for portable stove
  • a pair or two of clean clothes for each member
  • leashes for animals
  • Any important papers
  • Your identification

What ways do you keep yourself prepare in case of an emergency?

Candy Race Car – Great for Kids Parties

It is hard coming up with something for a classroom treat for holidays or for a child’s party. My son, Spencer loves taking something for his friends at school.

This treat isn’t healthy but it is easy to make and your kids will love it!

Candy Race Car- Great for Kids Parties

First you will need a glue gun, glue sticks (both I purchased at the dollar store.), mini Hershey chocolate bars, Tootsie rolls, chocolate coins and juice boxes.

You can also change it up. If you want instead of Tootsie Rolls, try a chocolate that is small like one to use for the front fender. You can choose a different small chocolate bar too. The sky is the limit on how you design yours.  Choose a juice box that is your child’s favourite.

I found mints in a wrapper didn’t give the same effect as a chocolate coin did for the wheel look. And the Hershey chocolate bar did look like it was a wing with the side flaps of the package.

Candy Race Car- Great for Kids Parties

Figure out how many cars that you wish to make and decide on the amount of items you need.  For one car you need one Hershey chocolate bar, one Tootsie roll , four chocolate coins and one juice box.

Just put a dab of glue on each coin and apply it to the juice box sides. Then put glue on the Tootsie roll and place it where the front of the car is located. Lastly put glue on the bottom of the Hershey chocolate bar and place it on the top back area of the race car.

It is that simple. And your kids will love the race cars for themselves and their friends!

Let me know if you make this for your child’s class or birthday parties in the comments below. I love hearing about how the kids enjoyed them.

Greener Options for Household Cleaning

Greener Options for Household Cleaning #Greener #KidFriendly #Cleaning

Many of us try to reduce the amount of toxic chemicals in our home and want to use greener options when cleaning.

Especially when you have children and pets running around, you don’t want them exposed to possible harmful affects of some chemicals.

While a lot of cleaners now aren’t as harmful as they once were, sometimes it is good to keep alternatives around so you can even use those if you run out.

These greener options are something most of us have around our homes and in our kitchen cupboards.

Homemade Coffee Creamer

A lot of us use coffee creamer in our morning coffees.

It takes 15 chemicals to make up coffee creamer.

The best alternative is to make your own with 3 ingredients.

I am not able to have store bought creamer with my health diet for my kidney failure.

But with these recipes I can at least have cream in my coffee!

Canadian Basics

Ingredients:

14oz sweetened can of condensed milk

2 cups of milk

(optional) Add one of these to give the creamer a flavour:

1/3 cup flavoured syrup

Cocoa Powder

Vanilla Extract

Almond Extract

Cinnamon

1/3 flavoured syrup

Mix together and enjoy!

2 tsps. Vanilla Extract- French Vanilla

1 Tblsp Cinnamon, Vanilla, and Almond Extract- Strudel Cake

2 tbsps. chocolate syrup, 1 teaspoon instant coffee, 1-2 teaspoons of vanilla extract & 1 teaspoon almond extract – Irish Cream

Experiment in making your own flavours!
