I don’t know about you but when I first started to learn to cook, this was one thing I could never remember! How long should I cook the turkey?
I think it is easy to forget because how often do most of us cook a turkey? I know myself it is usually only on holidays. The turkey must reach 185 degrees F. for food safety. (use meat thermometer ) Remember to remove the neck and giblets. Sounds silly but some people forget and cook them in the turkey. Before placing turkey into oven brush lightly with butter (about 2 tablespoons) add any seasoning you wish. If you want to stuff bird place stuffing in bird just before you place it in the oven.
Here is an easy guide to know how long to cook that turkey:
Stuffed Turkey (roasting at 325 degrees F.)
6-8lbs cook for 3 to 3 1/2 hours
8-12lbs cook for 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 hours
12-16lbs cook for 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 hours
16-20lbs cook for 5 1/2 to 6 hours
20-24lbs cook for 6-6 1/2 hours
Unstuffed Turkey (roasting at 325 degrees F)
6-8lbs cook for 2 1/2 to 3 hours
8-12lbs cook for 3 to 4 hours
12-16lbs cook for 4-5 hours
16-20lbs cook for 5-5 1/2 hours
20-24lbs cook for 5 1/2 to 6 hours
Let it stand for 15 mins after cooking to rest. Place leftovers in fridge within 2 hours after cooking.
