Book Description:

It’s Clara who’s desperate to enter the labyrinth and its Clara who’s bright, strong, and fearless enough to take on any challenge. It’s no surprise when she’s chosen. But so is the girl who has always lived in her shadow. Together they enter. Within minutes, they are torn apart forever. Now the girl who has never left the city walls must fight to survive in a living nightmare, where one false turn with who to trust means a certain dead end.

History and Inspiration Behind the Book

Since I was a wee kidlit, I’ve loved Greek Mythology. That love has only grown and nowadays heavily influences my writing, some more than others. Children of Icarus, my new novel, is counted among the “some”. The inspiration for this book was, of course, drawn from the myth of Icarus—the boy who flew into the sun. But a lot of the setting of the book comes from the myths about Icarus’ father, Daedalus, who built the labyrinth. Children of Icarus takes place within a labyrinth, which the main character has been chosen to enter. She was promised paradise should she find her way out of the labyrinth, but paradise seems more unlikely than ever as she’s forced to confront one horror after another. Many of said horrors have been inspired by Greek mythology, mainly the adorable monsters that populate every great hero’s tale.

The thing is, I had the idea for Children of Icarus back in junior high. The plot was different in every way back then, aside from the setting of the labyrinth. Even the protagonist was an older, altered version of the way she is now. I actually started writing the story back then, but barely got a page in before giving up and moving on to something else. Fast-forward many a year, and I’m studying Greek mythology for my Classics minor at university. It reminds me of that old idea I had, so I revisit it and decide to tell the story of how my protagonist ended up in the labyrinth. I started writing from there, and everything about the story changed. For the better. And now we have a book. Ta-da!

Journey To Space Review & Giveaway

When I was a child, I was always interested in space. I remember doing a few projects on our solar system and learning about each planet.  My children also love learning about the solar system.  We are close to the hometown of one astronaut named Chris Hatfield. Chris Hatfield has come to my children’s school to talk about being up in space in the space station. So watching Journey to Space made it feel more real about what he talked about in an assembly.

Wrapless Burrito with Seeds of Change Rice Recipe

Seeds of Change

I love coming up with new recipes that I can make for my family that are good for us and also taste great. Since having my kidney transplant, I like making sure that we are eating the best for our bodies.

So yesterday, I decided that I would make Wrapless Refried Bean Burritos with Organic Spanish Style Rice from SEEDS OF CHANGE® with fresh vegetables from my garden. The SEEDS OF CHANGE® Spanish Style Rice is organic wholegrain rice with quinoa, red bell peppers and corn.

The best part? (Besides being organic) It heats up in the microwave for 90 seconds or on the stove for a few minutes. It isn’t often that ready-to-heat foods are good for you. While I don’t mind cooking, I love products that will heat up in no time for those nights that I don’t feel like cooking.

I cooked the SEEDS OF CHANGE® Spanish Rice in no time on the stove in no time on the stove. Mixed in the chopped vegetables and heated the refried beans. The whole meal took about 10 minutes for me to make and really is one I will make again. It was so good, I ate leftovers the next day for lunch.

GOODNESS FROM THE GROUND UP®

SEEDS OF CHANGE® has:

  • NO Preservatives
  • NO artificial colours
  • NO artificial flavours
  • IS Vegetarian Appropriate

SEEDS OF CHANGE® contains the finest organically grown ingredients.  And is the ONLY ready-to-heat rice and grain brand available in Canada.

SEEDS OF CHANGE® also donates 1% of sales to support and develop sustainable community based gardening and farming programs worldwide.

In Canada, SEEDS OF CHANGE® worked with local partner Evergreen to identify 12 community gardens from coast to coast who need grant money to get their garden started and keep them going all season long.

SEEDS OF CHANGE® established in 1989 as a small organic seed company and evolved into a strong producer of organic foods.

As a mother and a citizen in a farming community, I like supporting a company like SEEDS OF CHANGE® because they support not only bringing healthy great tasting food to our homes but also helping those in our communities around the globe.

To fine out more about SEEDS OF CHANGE® check out their website by going to seedsofchange.ca

The Seeds of Change® Canada Facebook page is also a  great resource for Canadians who are interested in growing or cooking with organic ingredients.

Done Growed Up Book Giveaway

Below is the interview of the author from Done Growed Up, Mary Morony.

You can purchase the book here.

Done Growed Up Giveaway

Tell us about yourself.

Having been blessed with a love for telling stories and a life full of drama/trauma loving to write, putting them all together seemed like a no brainer. It has turned out to be one of my greatest ideas in a life full of hair brain ideas. Writing about life issues, human foibles and family dysfunction even generally has given me a wonderfully healing prospective on my own life. Although some of the things I write about I have experienced these books are works of fiction.

What inspired your book Done Growed Up?

Mainly, I wanted Ginny Mackey to have a chance at redemption for her actions in my previous novel. Women in that time didn’t have it easy and Ginny lacked the resources for mental health. I wanted her to get help so my readers could see that she has a heart and soul.

Tell us about your main character.

Ginny Mackey is a recently divorced mother of four struggling to put her life back together after loosing a baby, going through a divorce and drowning her sorrows in alcohol.

What other books have you written?

Apron Strings the first in the Apron Strings

What do you think readers will find most appealing about your book?

I think my characters are multidimensional with redeemable qualities and hateful qualities…sometimes both. People really care what is going to happen to them.

How did you come up with the idea for your book cover?

Childhood is supposed to be a free and easy time. The girl flying the kite is representative of that feeling, but the child is a sillouette and there is an ominous darkness around her. Her representative mother is present in the scene to offer comfort, yet is not entirely focused on that task. It seemed that being “Done Growed Up” was represented well on all counts and the main characters’ personalities also shine through on this cover.

What are you currently working on?

My fourth novel entitled Shooting in the Dark at Scarce Birds is a novel set in Oak Ridge Tennessee during the war. It is about secrets in a secret city.

How can readers discover more about you and your work?
