Keeping a Long Distance Marriage Alive

My husband is a truck driver and he is gone through the week. Usually that means that I will see him for his required time off and then he is back on the road again.

A part of me sometimes is jealous of those that have spouses that are home at night and they are able to see each other every day. We haven’t had that in almost a decade and we have been together for 17 years, so this has been a way of life for us for a long time. We have learned ways to keep our relationship going strong.

Before he became a truck driver, my husband worked out of town. And I use to feel a pain of jealousy for those that could see him daily. It was silly to feel jealous but it happens when you don’t see them daily. These people saw him often and I only got to see him on weekends, so it was hard. It is one of the reasons why we changed how we did things, and learned to make the most out of the moments that we had together.

Here are ways for keeping a long distance marriage alive. I call it a long distance marriage even though he does come home at the end of the week because he is gone more than he is home.

Frugal Valentine’s Day Ideas for Couples

Valentine’s Day means spending the day with a special someone. It doesn’t mean you have to break the bank in order to enjoy some time with them and celebrate your relationship.

Simple ideas can make your day perfect.

There have been many years that my husband and I stayed in and just enjoyed the day together. Especially when the kids were younger. It wasn’t easy to find a sitter for Valentine’s Day so we usually just made dinner and watched a movie together.

Here are some frugal ideas for Valentine’s Day:

Make a coupon booklet for someone special. Add your own ideas to the book. (ie. Foot Rub, Night off from Cooking, Date Night Your Choice etc. ) You can find a free template from 247moms.com to use when you are making your coupon booklet. (If you don’t want to make your own from scratch.)

Instead of going out, make dinner and surprise your special someone with a romantic dinner by candle light. (Bonus points if you make your special someone’s favourite meal. )

If you have Netflix, watch the movie of your first date if it is on there or pick a movie you both want to see. Grab some snacks, cuddle and enjoy the movie together.

Make a collage of photos of you as a couple. Add any ticket stubs or brochures to places you have been together. Maybe even add stuff from where you went on your first date. Give it to your special someone to hang up.

Have a firepit in the backyard? Bundle up, grab some wine, start a fire. Enjoy each other’s company under the stairs while you talk and laugh. Don’t like to drink? Make hot chocolate for both of you to enjoy.

Spending time at a fire.

Stick Love Notes all over the house where your special someone would find them. Because my husband is a trucker and on the road often. I like to stick notes into his gym bag, so that he see them when he needs to get clothes out for himself.

If you have the children with you on Valentine’s Day, you can make it special with them. Have heart shaped foods (Pizzas, eggs, cupcakes and more), play some board games together and then settle down with some snacks and with a kid friendly movie on Netflix. (or pop a movie into the DVD player.)
